We witnessed some bird drama upon returning home from the Yosemite trip. I was tidying up the front yard and heard a raven making an unusual clacking sound. She was wheeling around above the neighbor’s tall pine tree, in a state of agitation. Then I noticed a Cooper’s Hawk in the tree, scrutinizing the bird feeder station in our yard. A Mourning Dove took off from our yard and the Coop’ started after it, only to be harassed in flight by the raven. Apparently the raven was protecting the dove; it stayed near the hawk for a while longer, until the predator eventually took off down the street. I wouldn’t think that a raven would take on the larger bird, but it was able to interfere long enough for the dove to make her escape. A demonstration of uncommon valor from the Common Raven.
