I started working on the landscaping around the new fence, and spent a good part of Sunday out there conditioning the soil and adding plants (lavender, some grasses). There’s about a foot or so of space between the fence and the sidewalk, and the lavender should do well in this sunny spot. There were many unsolicited favorable comments about the fence from the legion of weekend strollers and dog walkers. Although one of the old-timer Golden Retrievers, “Nugget”, seemed confused as to why he could no longer roam with abandon across our front yard. I’m sure he’ll adjust. But the really neat thing happened Sunday evening, when the Resident Expert called me over to the kitchen window to see this:
Those two Mourning Doves on the table have been nesting at our house in recent years, and they have been most interested in the changes in the front yard. There has been a lot more bird and squirrel activity out here since the yard became more enclosed by the fence, and so it seems that the animal kingdom also approves.
