There’s an exceptionally good scene in the very good The Descendants, where Matt King and Sid have a late night chat. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve seen the movie. Sid hasn’t been making a great impression on Matt up to this point; he’s likely to say and do inappropriate things, which is great for us movie watchers, but Matt finds him to be barely tolerable. But they have this chat, and there’s a moment where Matt discovers that Sid may have a lot more going on than he would have imagined. This was movie magic to me. The actors handled this moment just right, and the direction, writing – even the lighting was perfect. Their otherwise separate worlds of experience intersected briefly as in a Venn diagram. You could tell that they recognized this was happening, but they didn’t overtly mark that as big deal, and go on and on about it. Right on.
