The Fox Theater is now in the hands of the lending company that had initiated the foreclosure process, as no one stepped up to bid on it in yesterday’s auction. It faces an uncertain future. Not exactly what the city planners had in mind when they embarked on the downtown project several years ago. The movie theater complex and new restaurants are bringing people downtown, but the large spaces developed for retail are mostly dark and vacant. We noticed an ancillary effect of that last night; the downtown sidewalks are poorly lit, as the vintage-style streetlamps are mostly for show. The planners may have anticipated that the sidewalks and streets would be illuminated by all of the storefront window displays and signs.
