supposed to be so smart

I’ve replaced the two power strips for the home entertainment center and desktop system/peripherals with so-called Smart Strips.  With these guys, one controlling device decides whether others will get power.  So the DVD player, video player, receiver, and speakers only get power when we turn the TV on.  Same with the printer & speakers – they’re on only when the PC is on.  The concept here is to reduce sending standby power for all these things when we aren’t using them.  My work associate suggested something like a sprinkler timer control for the wireless hub – we rarely use this after 11 or before 6am, and so that could be off during those hours.  It really only needs to be on during evening hours and weekends.
