winding down and unwinding

These are expresssions we hear a lot these days.  AIG is winding down its operations, as it unwinds the complicated credit default swaps.  The war in Iraq is winding down.  GM is unwinding its relationship with Fiat.  At the same time, people seem to be getting more “wound up”.  I’m starting to sound a bit Andy Rooney-ish in this post.  Oh well, too late – it’s out in the blogosphere.  Can’t get it back.
